Ethiopia Wodie Yirgacheffe Washed – Ethiopian Specialty Coffee
The Ethiopia of Abedech Wodie from Omkafè’s “Selezione” is a top-quality specialty coffee from the renowned Yirgacheffe region in southern Ethiopia, the historic cradle of Arabica coffee. Abedech Wodie is the father of seven children and comes from Adado, in the Yirgacheffe district (Gedeo zone). This lot comes from the traditional sub-varieties Kumie, Diga, and Wilsho (local names) and is grown under the shade of acacia and Sudan teak (Cordia Africana) on an area of 2.9 hectares.
Specialty coffee from the cradle of coffee for Omkafè’s Selezione
As the cradle of coffee, Ethiopia hosts more species of coffee plants than anywhere else in the world, many of which still grow wild, while many others remain unexplored. Traditionally, these varieties were simply labeled as “traditional varieties,” whereas we know that the lot selected by Omkafè is composed of Kumie, Diga, and Wilsho.
Grown at high altitude and processed using the washed method, this coffee expresses a clean, elegant, and complex aromatic profile. In the cup, it stands out for its bright and refined acidity, typical of washed Ethiopian coffees. The main notes recall citrus fruits, white flowers, and black tea, with delicate hints of bergamot, lemon, and jasmine. The body is silky and light, with a persistent and fresh finish.
For this lot, a washed processing method was used, involving a 36-hour fermentation period followed by 17 days of drying on raised African beds.
Refined acidity and delicate, lingering aromas immediately struck me. I chose this coffee as part of Omkafè’s “Selezione” project both for its evident quality and for the characteristics of the producer: a single farmer, father of seven children, committed to high-level cultivation and focused on enhancing the qualities of Ethiopian coffee and his land.
